Later this week, I’ll be attending RailsConf 2008. There will be blog posts here, I’m sure, with any interesting info. If you like your updates in 140-character bursts, you can follow my Twitter feed at http://www.twitter.com/noelrap.
Thanks to the marketing folk at Wiley, I will be armed with some number of copies of Professional Ruby on Rails to do with what I will. I’ll also have about 500 marketing flyers — I have no idea what to do with those.
The books, though, I plan on giving away. Here’s the deal:
I’m going to be carrying some small number of books each day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). The first people to come up to me and ask for one get a free book — please do give me your name so I can mention you on this blog and so forth. I’ll be the guy who looks like the picture to the left. Only in color. And wearing glasses.
If you catch me and I’m out of books for the day, give me your email address.
If you aren’t going to RailsConf, leave a comment to this blog post, make sure you have enough information for me to contact you.
When I get back to the conference, I’ll pick randomly from the email addresses I’m given or from comments here to give away the remaining books.
I reserve the right to award a book to one particularly clever, witty, or appropriate comment.
This is all subject to availability — I don’t know how many books I’m going to have. I’m not going to use the emails for any purpose other than notifying emails.
I’m looking forward to meeting and hearing from you and hoping that I actually give away some books.

It’s nice to see freebies given away all the time
I’m actually pretty new in Rails, and having actually using it to develop one of my current project as university assessment made me realised its powerful. I’ve got some pretty decent books for beginners, but would love to have one that takes me to a higher level of understanding of RoR.
Cheers!
Hey hey hey, I’d like a free book!
Thanks for the chance for the free book. I’ll enjoy checking your book out, free or not, but even more so if its free.
May I have the leftover book?
I am looking forward to learn Ruby on Rails and currently there doesn’t seem to be any decent book covering Rails 2.x. I am still new to Rails so I was thinking to skip the previous version of Rails.
Thank you very much.
Edwin
I would take one. Thanks!
Hoping for a free book!
“I’ll be the guy who looks like the picture to the left. Only in color. And wearing glasses.” Why no glasses in the book cover shot?
Anyhow, congratulations on the book – here’s hoping the sales go through the roof.
Woo hoo…the first comment must be worth a book
I would love to have a copy of your book.
Not going to RailsConf but I’d like one of the books. Thanks.
I would love a free copy … what’s the catch? That I have you staring at me like that, from the cover?
I’d love a copy. No RailsConf for me
I would love a copy of this book!
Hey Noel,
I won’t be able to make it to this year’s RailsConf and I’d really appreciate being entered into the drawing. So, what do you think about a book for the first commenter?
Ethan
I take that back, the second commenter…the first guy, he’s not interested.
I take that back, how about the second commenter?
If I update this…
Sound sweet… Especially if this can be applied to us, folks in Europe
I would love a free copy as well, and I don’t mind you staring at me all night long. Although, that DOES sound creepy.
Great, I would love one too, i can send you a copy of “advanced JavaServer Pages” in return!
No shipping of free copy by post ?
I would love one of these books and I hope the code is as good as your looks!
Ive only been doing unprofessional rails up until now. All i need is your book and i’m set.

it formatted my comment…
supposed to be Book.create(
I have surrendered my life to the rails framework. Only problem is I dont understand it yet. Im returning to IT after a 3 year haitus. I used to know everything now I know nothing, but I am ready to make a significant investment in this technology.
This book would be a great help.

thx
I would really like a copy also. The budget for books is low at my house right now. I’ll be sure to hock it if I like it.
I, too, would love a free copy. I hear tanstaafl all the time, but this is a book, not a lunch.
Do you ship outside of US?
I’d love a copy! But I’m witless. Er, not witty. Uh oh.
I would also love a free copy….got to escape the .Net morts!
I look forward to reading your book, whether it is free or I have to buy it.
If you give me a free copy of your book, I will post a picture of my wee-wee on the intranet!@
Programmers should read (carefully) a lot of technical books. So i plan to buy you book anyway
Aloa
I would love to have a copy of your book, too…
See’ya
Leif
I would love a copy of the book. my email address is associated with my comment. Congrats!
Hi Noel!
Wouldn’t it be great if a copy of your book were used to help some Rails projects here in Brazil? Because that’s what is going to happen if you send me one!
C’mon dude, let that book travel a little and see some brazilian sun!
My email address is [email protected]
Thanks!
I would like a copy of your book!
Hey, I would be honored o receive a book from you.
Thanks a lot!
I am a huge fan of Ruby, and Ruby on Rails and I would love a copy of your book.
Comment 38. But I’m also hoping to get one.
I for one welcome our new book giving overlord!
I want a free book!
Actually just nice to know that the book’s on the market… Will check out. Cheers~
Hi Noel. I’d be grateful for a free copy of your book as well. Thanks.
I would love a Ruby on Rails book, it will help me transition from verbose Java to beautiful Ruby
send(:book).to(Chris).plz do
I came across RoR in the last month only and it has stunned me to see the amount of information flowing across the community. The free books and tutorials are alwayz a blessing for a newbie like me. So I do hope I get a copy.
Yours witlessly, Andy
I’d like a free book please. As you can see from the (current) main blog post on my site, I’m fairly new to Rails and already a big fan!! Thanks.
Congrats on the book
Have a blast at Railsconf
Well, if I got a Pro book on Rails I could give my ‘non’ Pro Rails books to some Java programmer friends of mine who are in desperate need of an imagination injection. But then, they may regard them as works of fiction
Hi!
If you may send this book to France It will be a great help for a Ruby on Rails beginner like me… ^_^
Thanks a lot!
Great marketing:) Polish team would be very happy to receive the book.
require ‘shoulda’
class ContestTest < Test::Unit
context “A raffle for Professional Ruby on Rails” do
setup do
@winner = Commenter.find(rand)
end
should “make Luc the winner” do
assert @winnder == “Luc”
end
end
end
end
I know this is the book which would transform you from a novice ruby on rails hobyist developer to a ruby professional…
and did you say its free… I am in for the offer..
Unfortunately won’t be at RailsConf, but I’ll happily have one if it’s available!
Thanks, i’ll follow you. we’ll be very happy to receive the book in china.
I’d love a copy to get me started with Rails; perhaps you could update the cover by drawing in your own glasses! Thankyou.
