Excellent choice... though maybe _why could have pulled it off (using his own illustrations, of course). It never would have been finished, alas...

Ignoring that, right before Rails came out I was trying to convince the company I work for that we should do an IR&D (Internal research and development) on doing a web framework. I'd realized that a whole lot of web development was basic CRUD for databases, and so having a tool which would examine your database and write the basic CRUD functions (probably in Java) would be a huge step.

My proposal got shot down :-) but shortly thereafter Rails showed up, so I was kind of glad I hadn't gotten committed to something that would be overtaken.

I wrote a blog post <a href="http://www.pardontheinformation.com/2008/09/java-vs-ruby-on-rails-it-is-dead-heat.html" rel="nofollow">Java vs. Ruby on Rails</a> that I thought you might enjoy.

That's brilliant. I think you made the right decision. Along with such seminal tomes as the Pickaxe there also could have been the infamous Engine That Could. To be square I think the theme could have damaged Rails' reputation in a formulative period of its life .. there's nothing like a naff-themed book to cut a phenomenon off at its knee-caps. I think now would be the time to dust off the text though, except make it into a kind of history, or retrospective of sorts.
