Body Area Sensor Networks combine pervasive wireless networks, small non-invasive sensors and ultra-low power consumption chips to enable the continuous collection of physiology data from ambulatory patients. The Vitalink remote patient monitoring solution consists of:
- Wearable bio sensors that collect ECG, respiratory bioimpedance, 2-wavelength pulse oximetry, temperature and 3-axis accelerometers
- An off the shelf Android based smartphone that collects these physiological signals from the bio sensors via bluetooth and transmits them via the Verizon Private Data Network
- A cloud-based analytics server which uses predictive analytics to identify significant medical abnormalities earlier than current systems are able to do.
This technology enables the daily monitoring of patients with chronic diseases and provides early notification to clinicians of a negative change. The VitaLink™ remote patient monitoring solution was developed under a contract with the Veterans Administration and is currently the subject of two IRB approved clinical studies; one with the VA and a second with the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Wireless Sensors and Mobile Apps in Healthcare
When you combine cheap sensors with the computing power and interface capabilities of modern iPhones and Android smartphones, you can get powerful mobile diagnostics. When you add in smartphones’ data transmission capabilities to feed data analytics in the cloud, you have the potential to dramatically improve the state of medicine.
Last week I wrote about a project we worked on this area, VG Bio’s Vitalink, which combines wearable bio sensors, an android smartphone and cloud based predictive analytics to identify significant medical abnormalities earlier than current systems are able to do.

Examples of Medical Software We’ve Built
Wearable Sensor Based Remote Patient Monitoring System
VitaLink, a project we recently worked on with our client VGBio, illustrates the potential power of combining body area sensor networks with mobile apps, cloud computing and machine learning based predictive analytics.
Driving Meaningful Use with iPhone EMR Applications
We designed and developed iPhone and iPad applications for a specialty EMR vendor that helped our client improve clinical decision making at the point of care and drive adoption and meaningful use of their platform.
iPad Patient Portal App for EMR System
Pathfinder worked with our customer, a specialized EMR vendor, to develop a feature-rich patient check-in system that takes full advantage of the iPad’s user friendly touch screen and efficient form factor. The integrated patient portal allows for patient pre-registrations and streamlined patient/office interactions
Tablet Based Health Counseling Interview App
This tablet based touch application enables Health Educators to gather data and provide enhanced feedback during the motivational interview process without losing rapport with the patient.
Mobile Solution to Improve Medical Workflow
We designed a mobile solution to streamline and reduce errors in the apheresis (blood donation) process that was so intuitive that it caused our client to remark that “We laugh about it. We don’t even have to demo it. They just take it out of your hand and start using it.”
Clinical Decision Support Using Evidence-Based Medicine
We re-architected and developed clinical decision support system that aggregates and analyzes clinical information against highly respected sources of evidence-based medicine to identify gaps in care, medical errors and quality issues so that it could scale (to 20 million lives covered and counting) and helping our client to a $450 million exit (11x revenue.)
Mobile Medical CME iPhone App
Performance on Demand™ (POD) is a customized performance improvement CME tool exclusively offered by Vindico Medical Education. Pathfinder worked with Vindico Medical Education to develop iPhone, iPad and web versions of the application. POD enables physicians to improve their professional practice and patient care outcomes while earning earning AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
eSpark Learning: Pandora for Education
We’ve been working with eSpark Learning since the idea stage, and recently helped them launch version one of their platform to great success. We sat down with David Vinca, eSpark’s Founder and CEO to talk about eSpark and his experience working with us.
